A focused / ellipted adjective group is an adjective structure where:
- the adjective is given special emphasis (focus), or
- part of the grammatical structure is omitted because the meaning is already understood (ellipsis).
These forms are common in advanced and literary English.
Focused Adjective
The adjective is moved or emphasized for dramatic effect.
Example
Impossible to ignore was the tension in the room.
Normal form:
The tension in the room was impossible to ignore.
The adjective phrase is fronted to create emphasis.
Ellipted Adjective
Words are omitted because they are understood from context.
Example
Those responsible were punished.
Full form:
Those who were responsible were punished.
The words who were are omitted.
Combined Focus + Ellipsis
Example
Difficult though not impossible, the task was eventually completed.
Full form:
Although the task was difficult, it was not impossible.
The sentence compresses information and emphasizes the adjectives.
Three Additional Examples
Exhausted but determined, she continued working.
(= Although she was exhausted, she remained determined.)
Present at the meeting were several distinguished scientists.
(focused inversion)
Anyone interested should apply immediately.
(= Anyone who is interested should apply.)
