’s with an Ellipted Noun
“Their solution proved more practical than the engineer’s.”
Here, the engineer’s means the engineer’s solution. The noun solution is omitted because it is already understood.
5 examples:
- My car is faster than John’s. → John’s car
- Her presentation was better than the manager’s. → the manager’s presentation
- Our house is larger than our neighbour’s. → our neighbour’s house
- I prefer your idea to Sarah’s. → Sarah’s idea
- Their project was better than the students’. → the students’ project
Pattern:
Possessor + ’s + omitted noun
→ the engineer’s [solution]
