The ayah 'And do not kill your children out of fear of poverty' (6:151) was revealed regarding the Quraysh's practice of female infanticide. Revealed in Mecca (early-middle Meccan period) concerning the pagan Arabs who would eat carrion and meat not slaughtered in Allah's name, and would argue with the Prophet asking 'What Allah has killed (carrion) is more worthy to be eaten than what you slaughter.'
